TOURIST ITINERARIES IN NATURE

MONTE PATALECCHIA

The "Monte Patalecchia, Torrenti Lorda e Longaniello" Regional Nature Reserve is located in the western part of the Matese Mountains and extends over 2,223 hectares. The clearings and mountain plateaus are carpeted with grassy formations that have replaced the original Turkey oak and beech forests. This perennial carpet of greenery represents an important oxygen laboratory and a constant fodder factory.

The reserve encompasses the areas of Castelpetroso, Santa Maria del Molise, Castelpizzuto, Isernia, Pettoranello del Molise, Longano, and Sant'Agapito and, since August 2017, has been managed by the environmental association Italia Nostra.

The forest is a living, diverse, and complex environment that hosts a large number of plant and animal species, all linked by mutual biological relationships. The plants are distributed in layers, depending on the light and humidity requirements of each species. The shrub layer consists of young trees, shrubs such as hawthorn, juniper, and hazel, and climbing plants such as ivy. The beech undergrowth is rich in mushrooms, raspberries, oregano, and other medicinal herbs, also useful for research purposes.
The mountain's steep slopes are marked by deep grooves that create ever-changing and evocative plays of light, with ridges and panoramic viewpoints immersed in a healthy environment that remains largely untouched. The picturesque blooms and nature trails offer opportunities for walking, trekking (even at donkey pace), hiking, and snowshoeing. The ancient paths and sheep tracks that lead to the surrounding peaks are also accessible on horseback and mountain bike.

Mammals are the predominant animal species in the area, easily identifiable even without sightings. Among the most common species are wild boar, fallow deer, and roe deer. Carnivores include the fox, easily spotted even near residential areas, the beech marten, and the weasel. There is also abundant evidence of the widespread presence of the Apennine wolf. Of particular importance is the presence of the yellow-bellied toad, a toad-like animal now at risk of extinction, whose identification is made easier by its small size and bright coloration.
From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy a marvelous view: villages scattered all around, splashes of color and life, the spectacular Basilica Minore dell'Addolorata, and, on the other side, a bright, velvety green.

A precious heritage to be protected, the reserve can offer opportunities for the development of sustainable economic activities, contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, and stand out as an ideal place to educate younger generations to respect nature and the careful use of the land's resources.

ITINERARIO : La Maddalena - l’Apparizione

The trail begins at La Maddalena, an ancient rural chapel nestled in the cultural landscape of Castelpetroso, a small treasure trove of beauty, nestled in the greenery of this small Molise town.

With the entrance behind us, we walk along the small asphalt road heading northwest. After a few meters (about 150), near a ruin (which is on our right), we spot a small green trail on our left and take it.

The view immediately opens up, and in the distance we see the Basilica Minore dell'Addolorata and the Monte Patalecchia complex, one of the last foothills of the Matese mountain range. The trail descends gently, an old path that once connected La Maddalena to the hamlet of Cifelli, which we'll cross completely, even navigating through narrow alleys.

When we reach the Chapel of the Madonna del Santissimo Carmine (about 0.8 km), we keep right and take the main paved road that descends southwest. We pay attention, even though it's not a busy road, and continue downhill. Shortly after (about 1 km), we see a fork in the road, so we keep right and take the road that descends toward a small roundabout.

Once we reach the roundabout (about 1.1 km), we continue to the right, continuing downhill towards the SS17 and the Sanctuary, which we can see in the distance.

We continue on a slight incline, quickly reaching a fork (about 1.5 km), and continue, keeping left. After a few meters, near the school complex, we take the small road on our right that leads us near a supermarket, which will remain on our left. We continue for a few meters, coming across a pedestrian walkway on our left, which will lead us to the underpass that will take us beyond the SS17.

We continue through the underpass and, once we've passed it, near a small shop selling local products, continue straight on the main road towards the Sanctuary.
We pay attention and continue straight at the first fork on our left. After a few meters, at the second fork (about 1.9 km), we keep right, taking the road that initially is paved and soon becomes a dirt track: we are on the Pescasseroli-Candela Tratturo. We follow the dirt road and, near the fork (about 2.3 km), we continue left, taking the paved road that climbs steeply, beginning the ascent towards the Sanctuary. We have reached the area below the Sanctuary (about 2.7 km), and at the fork, we continue right, continuing uphill, arriving at the Basilica Minore dell'Addolorata. After a "mandatory" visit to the Sanctuary, at the exit, with the Sanctuary behind us, we see a flight of steps and the Sentiero Italia (CAI) signage. We move towards the stairs and follow them. Soon the stairs will give way to a small dirt path from which a magnificent mule track will begin.

The mule track climbs steeply and will inevitably lead us towards the site of the apparitions. Pay attention at approximately km 3.6, where we continue straight at the fork and, after a few meters, at the next one, keep left, continuing the ascent. Just a few more meters and we'll have reached the end of the route. As you ascend the mule track, we recommend turning around and admiring the Sanctuary from a pleasant perspective.
